Our Driving Istructor Training Process

ADI Part 1 is the first stage of becoming an Approved Driving Instructor (ADI). This is a theory-based examination set by the DVSA, designed to test your knowledge of road safety, traffic laws, the Highway Code, driving techniques and instructional skills. The test consists of 100 multiple-choice questions, followed by a hazard perception test involving 14 video clips. You must demonstrate a strong understanding of driving standards and the ability to recognise developing hazards.

At Road Pilot Driver Training, we help you prepare for ADI Part 1 by developing your theoretical knowledge and understanding of the subjects covered in the examination. With structured learning, regular revision and practice questions, we aim to build your confidence and give you the best possible preparation for passing your first qualifying test.

ADI Part 2 is the second stage of your instructor training and focuses on your practical driving ability. The DVSA examiner will assess your driving skills, vehicle control, road awareness, judgement and ability to demonstrate a consistently high standard of driving. The test lasts approximately one hour and includes an eyesight check, vehicle safety questions and an assessed practical drive.

At Road Pilot Driver Training, we help you develop the advanced driving skills and confidence needed to meet the DVSA’s required standard. Our training focuses on improving observation, planning, positioning, anticipation and decision-making, ensuring you can demonstrate safe, responsible and professional driving throughout your assessment.

ADI Part 3 is the final qualifying stage before becoming a fully qualified Approved Driving Instructor. This assessment focuses on your ability to teach a learner driver safely and effectively. During the test, a DVSA examiner will assess your instructional skills, communication, lesson planning, risk management and ability to identify and respond to a pupil’s learning needs. You will need to demonstrate that you can deliver a structured, effective and safe driving lesson.

At Road Pilot Driver Training, we support you in developing the teaching techniques and professional skills required to become a successful driving instructor. Our training focuses on lesson structure, effective communication, identifying driving faults, providing clear feedback and managing risk. We aim to prepare you to become a confident, knowledgeable and professional instructor who can help learners develop into safe and responsible drivers.

A trainee driving instructor licence, also known as a Potential Driving Instructor (PDI) licence, allows you to gain valuable teaching experience and provide paid driving lessons while working towards becoming a fully qualified Approved Driving Instructor (ADI). It is an optional stage of the qualification process and is available to eligible candidates who have passed ADI Part 1 and Part 2 but have not yet passed ADI Part 3.

The licence is valid for six months and is commonly recognised by the pink badge displayed in the instructor’s vehicle. During this period, you must follow one of two DVSA training options: receive direct supervision from a qualified ADI for at least 20% of the lessons you deliver, or complete at least 20 hours of additional instructor training. This experience helps you develop your teaching methods, build confidence with real pupils and prepare for the final ADI Part 3 instructional ability test.
